Greening Newham

Our neighbourhood could be calmer, greener and a lot safer. The council is asking what you want on your streets right now.

Newham is running a twelve-week consultation on parking and what we do with our kerbs. It's the biggest say we'll get on our streets for years.

The trouble is, nearly every question is about parking a car. Nothing asks about traffic cutting through our residential streets, nothing asks about road safety, and nothing asks whether you'd rather have a tree or a wider pavement outside your house. If the only people who answer are the people the questions were written for, that's the answer the council gets.

Closes 10 December 2026

Fill in the council's survey

This is the one that gets counted, so it's worth ten minutes. The tick boxes are mostly about parking, so the free-text boxes are where you can actually say what you think. A few things worth putting in them:

  • Where rat-runs and bad parking make your street congested or dangerous
  • A junction or crossing near you that feels dangerous and is difficult to cross safely
  • What you'd like to see at the kerb instead: trees, a cycle hangar, somewhere to sit, a wider pavement
  • How you and your family actually get about

Send a note to your councillors

The survey goes to council officers. This goes to the people who'll vote on what happens next. Fill this in, we'll put the words together, and you send it from your own email.

About you

Pop your postcode in and we'll work out your ward and your councillors. No need to know it yourself.

How do you get about?

Tick everything that applies. Most of us do a bit of all of it.

What would you most like to change?

Pick up to three. Three things said well lands better than a list of everything.

Now the bit that really counts

Be as specific as you can. A general worry is easy to file away. A named corner, with a reason, is much harder to ignore, especially when forty neighbours name the same one.

Anything else you want to say

Drop a pin on the map

The council's consultation has a map you can add to. Put the same junction on it, so it sits in their evidence rather than only in someone's inbox. If it's already been pinned, add a comment to that pin instead. Ten comments on one corner carries a lot more weight than ten pins spread about.

Want to know how it turns out?

We'll let you know what the council does with all this, and give you a nudge if there's a meeting worth turning up to. This is just to us, and it's separate from the email above.

We'd only use it if something came up too quickly for email.

What we'd do with your details
  • Who holds them: Greening Newham, a group of local residents. We decide how your details are used, which in data protection terms makes us the data controller. You can reach us any time at .
  • What we keep: your name, your email, your mobile if you choose to give it, and your ward. Nothing else, and we don't track you around the site.
  • Why we're allowed to: because you've ticked the box to say we can. That's our lawful basis, and it's consent, so you can withdraw it at any point and we have to act on it.
  • What we use them for: news about the parking review and street safety across Newham. We won't use them for anything else without asking you first.
  • Who else sees them: no one outside our small group of volunteers. We don't sell them, swap them, or hand them to any political party or candidate.
  • How long we keep them: until you ask us to stop, or two years after we last hear from you, whichever comes first. Then we delete them.
  • Your rights: you can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Reply to anything we send, or email the address above, and we'll sort it within a month.
  • If we get it wrong: tell us first and we'll try to put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
